Toulouse sketches (11th of May 2012)

>> Workshop in Toulouse has ended, and I happily returned to the
geography I am familiar with, and I could tell a lot about it all, but I don't know whether it would be interesting
or not. I will think about it.
In the meantime, I present sketches of participants of the conference that I made mostly during their lectures. It was
a demanding business because the lecturers move a lot, of course, but I was pretty successful in some cases. Perhaps
the most successful sketch is the one of Rudi Podgornik (above) which I made during an informal discussion in the
conference hall. I am sure that anyone who knows Rudi can recognize his face in the sketch.

I will not state the names of other people on the sketches because I don't want them to find themselves on my pages, since I did not ask for their permission to publish their portraits. If you really want to know who they are, seek for the information on the sketches themselves.

Some sketches were made exceptionally quickly and they were a success. I spent a lot more time on some others, adding the details, and it didn't work as it should. It is important to get the correct geometry of the head and the face in the early phase of the sketch. It is difficult to correct the errors later.

A young lad from the image above sat across the table during the conference dinner. Instead of going out after the
main course and lighting a cigarette or two, I opened my portable notebook I carried around with me everywhere
and sketched the guy.
During the dinner, we were talking about:
- Connections between Slovenian, Croatian and Polish languages
- Force-feeding the ducks which is characteristic for the Toulouse region
- Making adjectives (attributes) from nouns which is a procedure not tolerated by French language (e.g. ducky)
- Electrospinning
- Choice of the concepts in language, i.e. the choice of the concepts which will be given dedicated words (e.g. whether the same word is used for alive animal and its meat when eaten)
- Drawing and measuring, and why drawing can be easily learned while painting cannot
- Russia and Ukraine and whether Gogol was Russian or Ukrainian
- Computer graphics and its relation of photography, and why is knowledge of elementary photographic concepts and composition important for creation of good computer graphics
- Difference between cognac and armagnac (we finished the dinner with armagnac).

During the dinner, on my right, there was a scientist in a good mood, of Indian origin, sketched on the image above. I made a sketch during his lecture, not during the dinner. I spent a couple of interesting and cheerful hours with him driving on the metro and walking in Toulouse.

What can I say about the conference? I don't know. In any case, considering the fact that I didn't leave the vicinity of Zagreb for quite some time, it was an interesting change for me.
