Common centaury, 3rd of February 2018.

Common centaury (Centaurium erythraea) has a fragile stem with tiny flowers of a beautiful pink color, only 3 mm wide. Unopened flowers look like tiny cylinders. I painted it (the image above, left) in June last year on Krk island. I found it near the coastline, in shade. The illustration of the right side above comes from Atlas de poche des plantes des champs, des prairies et des bois a l'usage des promeneurs et des excursionnistes (Pocket atlas of plants of fields, meadows and woods for walkers and day-trippers) by R. Siélain (1895). The pocket atlas contains 128 color plates and 23 black-and-white plates with beautiful illustration of plants.
