Rhododendron, 27th of May 2017.

Click on the image above to show it in double resolution. Rhododendron I painted a month ago just started to bloom, but weakly - on the image one can see two barely opened flowers and four buds. Its leaves were mostly yellowish and I didn't expect the plant to produce many flowers, especially not those almost complete, four pi spheres of flowers which are rhododendron's hallmark. But three weeks later the plant was full of flowers, although somewhat wrinkled and washed-out, but still ...

Rhododendron in the image below is a work of a famous illustrator >> Walter Hood Fitch (1817 - 1892). The painting is interesting because it shows Fitch's exceptionally convinced and resolute aquarelle (right) next to the engraving and one can also see the dimension (top left) in centimeters. In his life, Fitch published more than 10000 botanical illustrations, a large number of them for Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London.
