Ministry of fear (20th of May 2010)

grey buildings with graffiti showing Statue of Liberty

All sorts of things are going on this days, in the world, but also in the local, micro-levels. One can feel some sort of dissatisfaction and anxiety, fear of future. Perhaps as a consequence of such atmosphere, the images I present were created. They show gloomy buildings of the Ministry of fear that someone "decorated" with the rebellious symbol of freedom. Next to grayness there is hope. But resistance also.

The work was made somewhat "by accident" because I work on the study of murky buildings for another project that is called "Resistance" and that has similar, although much subtler message.

The buildings are modular objects which means that they can be composed as "lego-bricks" from predefined elements. The elements contain basic structures, e.g. windows, walls, ornaments, doors and similar, and they can be combined in different ways. Using such an approach I made several variants of the Ministry of fear, and the best of them are shown below.

Ministry of fears with balconies
He enters nervously. Mumbled something, it cannot be heard properly. Raises his holo-glasses on his forehead. He has been calculating something again on his way home. Bad sign. His forehead is sweaty and his movements jerky. He is angry. Passes through space as if he is looking for something. Cannot find it. Sometimes looks at her. It is not a look full of love, there is more some kind of disillusionment and compassion to it, if one can see anything at all besides anger. She touches her fingertips, one then another, and then on the other hand. And then from the start. Another one of his days. She hopes he didn't kill someone. One cannot know with him. And then follows one of his well known monologues. Only details are different. He speaks apparently calm and quiet because his vocal cords have been betraying him for the last year. He would probably scream if he could.

The song by Tom Waits that I looked for today is called „Take me home“.
