Delphinium, 17th of June 2017.

Delphinium is special for a large number of flowers distributed cylindrically around the stem, achieving thus a large length / height of the blossom. In alpine species it reaches merely ten centimeters, but in the meadowland species and in hybrids, it can reach staggering 2 meters. In cultivated species a vertical support and fixation is typically required. Delphiniums attracts butterflies. They are also toxic. One specie is a frequent cause of poisoning of cows in western USA.

I painted the one above on the 2nd of June this year. Some stems were in full bloom, while some had only small buds. >> Click on the image to show it in full.
