Haeckel, DNA

Of all the stuff on the image, today I like the box of DNA "interpreter" the best (above). I designed it from scratch in PovRay, there are no mesh objects in it, it is all "logical" geometry (so called "constructive solid geometry", CSG). Little bulbs are great. As the "DNA" enters the "interpreter", the bulbs go on and off, and it draws the organism whose DNA it interprets. That's at least how I imagined it in year 2011 - more details about it all can be found in the post called >> Reducing Haeckel.

One should always start with light when creating the scene - in the present case, there are the interpreter bulbs, and there is also the main light in the room. But, light must be "captured" by objects which should be positioned cleverly so that they become "alive" when illuminated. When we don't have time, we sometimes recycle old works, so that's why I sometimes "borrow" objects from earlier works - here, the cup and the fountain pen were borrowed from >> After the cataclysm, and the desk from >> Trifaccia. The objects specially made for the scene (above) are the interpreter and the "plastic" DNA (above and below).

PovRAY routine for DNA codes for the random array of bases, depending on the seed of the random number generator. The atomic rings in the bases were represented by different colors and I also payed attention to correctly represent the number of hydrogen bonds in the base pairs (three between G and C, and two between A and T - they are shown as thin, silvery cylinders; above and below).
